Getting started

If you are starting out, your goal will be the gradual self-discovery of your perceptive skills to have greater knowledge of your body and space.

Sound references

Learn about the experience as a guide runner of Martiz Fiz, the champion athlete, and discover how he became part of the new EDP project, Share Your Energy.

Instructions from the guide

As the guide, you have to give the blind athlete touch and verbal instructions by directly touching the latter's body as the visually impaired cannot learn by visual demonstrations.

A unique team

Participant and guide make up a unique team. Your goal is the same.

Guiding methods

The runner will chose the way of being guided during the training: being elbow led, with a hand held tether and where the athlete is guided by small tugs or with no attachment by means of verbal instructions.

Finish line

When competing, the guide must always remain behind the runner when the latter is crossing the finish line.

Short sprints

In the case of sport sprints where the race is in a straight line, it will always take place with a guide. Sound references are occasionally used and if the runner is totally blind, up to two watchers can be located along the route, with one placed behind the finish line.

Long races

Several changes of guide are allowed on long races.

Distance between guide and blind athlete

The distance between the runner and guide must not exceed half a metre.

Identification of the guide

The guides must be clearly identified with a bright orange bib or as the race organisers indicate.

Benefits of athletics for blind athletes

Athletics help the blind and the visually impaired to significantly improve their personal, aerobic and physical condition. Each race helps the athletes to strengthen their full integration and social mainstreaming.

Notifying times

In races with distances over 800 metres, the athletes' trainers may report the times given by the scoreboards.

Approved glasses and masks

In all the races, the blind and visually impaired athlete may use dark glasses or masks approved by the technical official in charge.

Trainer of the blind runner

When competing at a high level, the trainer has a fundamental role.
